About the Photo: 1:30 a.m. in Iceland
Soft twilight settles over the countryside in eastern Iceland during the brief pause between sunset and sunrise. In midsummer, darkness never fully arrives and the landscape remains bathed in gentle light well past midnight.
After photographing sunrise in northeast Iceland, I was making my way back to southeast Iceland to photograph Stokksness and Vestrahorn for sunrise. However, the endless fields of lupines drew me in. Photographed along a quiet gravel road around 1:30 a.m., this scene captures fields of lupines with a hint of gentle swaying in the calm night air. The subtle motion and muted cool light reflect the unique rhythm of Iceland’s summer season. It felt like time was suspended and the landscape took on a dreamlike stillness, probably enhanced by my lack of sleep!
While this piece would look good at any size, printed large, you can really see the details in each flower, framed by the rare Iceland trees in the background.
