About the Photo: Bindings of Belief: The Ancient Tomes of Admont Abbey
Photographed inside the iconic Admont Abbey Library in Austria, this image captures more than just the beautiful bindings of books. With subtle textures and a slight curve to the shelving, it offers a quiet window into the scholarly soul of monastic Europe. These historical volumes tell a story of faith, wisdom, and the enduring power of books. Tucked within the oldest monastic library in the world at Admont Abbey, these shelves contain volumes that are centuries-old and once formed the intellectual backbone of Benedictine life. These books are bound in soft vellum and aged leather and include theological and philosophical works by great thinkers such as St. Jerome, Thomas Aquinas, and Dionysius the Areopagite. These texts were likely meticulously organized by the monks, ranging from biblical commentary to early science and mysticism, and used for generations of reflection, study and preservation of knowledge.
