About the Photo: Council of Ephesus: Ceiling Fresco, Abbey Library of St. Gallen
The intricate fresco from the ceiling of the Abbey Library of St. Gallen depicts includes four major ecumenical councils from early Christianity. In this photograph, I isolated the Council of Ephesus from 431 AD which was the third ecumenical council of the Christian Church. Painted by Josef Wannemacher in the mid-18th century, the scene shows those gathered to affirm the doctrine of the Virgin Mary as Theotokos, or God-bearer. Above them, a radiant sphere of divine light reveals the Holy Trinity and Mary crowned in heaven. The artwork blends faith, scholarship and a celestial vision and is framed in ornate Rococo stucco.
