About the Photograph
This photo, titled Cypress Alley, was photographed just as the dense morning fog began to lift in the beautiful Val d’Orcia. This tall, narrow driveway lined with cypress trees cut straight through the fog, giving the scene a strong sense of depth and repetition.
I chose a vertical panoramic format to emphasize the impressive height and rhythm of the trees rather than width. As the cypress trees rise through the frame, the perspective pulls you forward, making the viewer feel as if they are standing at the edge of the road, about to step into the scene.
This piece works exceptionally well when used in a tall space where a traditional horizontal image would feel compressed. Printed large, the vertical format amplifies the drama and makes the fog feel immersive rather than distant. In can also make for a great border piece, where you need a tall, thin piece of art to separate sections of a wall or room. It would also fit in a tall stairway area where you need that perfect thin, vertical piece.
