Autumn Grandeur Along the San Juan Skyway
There are few stretches of road in North America that can command as much reverence as the Million Dollar Highway. This legendary mountain road that reaches over 11,000 feet on Red Mountain Pass is located in the rugged San Juan Mountains between Ouray and Silverton. It's a beautiful drive any time of year, but if you visit in late September and early October this iconic highway becomes an absolute symphony of color with gold, yellow and orange autumn beauty in the vast aspen groves.
I photographed this just days before wind stripped many of these trees bare. In the fall, the timing is critical to catch peak colors. Too early and it's still green. Too late, and the main show is over. On this particular evening, the last light of the sun ignited a dramatic canopy of fiery orange and pink clouds overhead, creating a warm glow across the towering peaks. Below this, the landscape was on fire with an endless sea of golden aspen trees blanketing the mountainsides, contrasting sharply with the deep greens of a few evergreens. I photographed it with the empty highway to invite you into the frame, capturing the quiet, awe-inspiring solitude of a Colorado mountain sunset.
This high-resolution photograph is masterfully detailed, capturing the crisp clarity of the crisp autumn air. It is optimized specifically for large-scale presentation, making it a stunning, luxury statement piece for any home or office looking to bring the untamed beauty of the Rockies indoors."
