About the Photograph
This the streets still empty, walking through Pienza early in the morning felt almost private. The light was still soft and small details were beginning to stand out. I found this doorway mid-walk that stopped me in my tracks. Framed by stone walls, the door is layered with plants, flowers and climbing vines. The vertical composition helped emphasize the height of the doorway. The way the greenery spills downward, softened the structure and added a sense of age and care.
I chose the vertical format to keep the composition focused and intimate on the doorway, revealing texture, shape and balance. It reveals itself as Tuscan in the character and charm of the details.
When printed large, the detail in the stonework and foliage becomes especially tactile. It would make a strong piece for collectors who are drawn to architectural details and quieter moments rather than sweeping landscapes. This image pairs naturally with Restaurant on Piazza di Spagna, which captures another quiet corner of the town before the day begins. Pairing the two images together would give a slightly wider contextual view of the early morning atmosphere in Pienza.
