About This Photograph
Storm light is always a gamble wherever you photograph. But when you're in Provence for only a short time during lavender season, timing matters. After being skunked out the night before, I watched as heavy storm clouds formed to the northwest and began to move across the Valensole Plateau that afternoon. I knew it could be a dud, but I also knew there was a real chance the sun could break at just the right moment.
Thankfully, it did!
In the final hour as sunset began to set in, sunlight started filtering beneath the storm edge and lit up the lavender fields in deep purples and blues as a brilliant rainbow formed across the horizon. In fact, if you look close at a larger print of this photograph, you'll see the faint second arc of a double rainbow beginning to emerge. Rows of lavender pull your eye straight towards the distant hills and give the scene a sense of both scale and symmetry.
This was easily the best light I experienced during my time in Provence. One full evening for almost three hours, the storms rolled in and out, and amazingly clean light showcased the beauty of this iconic landscape of Provence. When printed large in a wide panoramic format, this piece from Valensole brings energy, color and movement into any space and works beautifully as a signature statement piece as both a metal and acrylic print. Shortly after this rainbow, the sunset lit up in beautiful colors over the distant mountains in my other piece, Provence Sunset Panorama.
