About the Photograph
I was lucky enough to have great conditions to photograph Chapel Vitaleta on my first ever morning in Val d’Orcia. I arrived after a sunrise shoot down the road to find conditions about as perfect as you could ever get! Dense fog was moving between hills and settling into the surrounding valleys. As the light warmed from the rising sun, the chapel appeared and disappeared as the mist and fog floating in and out, briefly revealing itself before being softened, and cycling through this over and over again, creating endless compositions.
By photographing this in a panoramic format, I was able to include the surrounding hills and fog, revealing the chapel within its landscape rather than isolating it. As the warm sunrise light filtered through the fog, it created a gentle contrast and a calm atmospheric mood.
This image combines one of the most recognizable landmarks in Tuscany with the fleeting conditions that can make mornings here feel so special. When printed large, the fog and light create a sense of quiet movement that feels like timeless and serene.
