About the Photo: Spring Burning of the Flint Hills
Nothing signals the start of spring in the Flint Hills of Kansas like the smell of smoke. We have an annual tradition of prescribed burnings of the tallgrass prairies in the Flint Hills each spring in February, March or April. This tradition was started by the Native American tribes many years ago and carried on by ranchers today. It promotes the growth of new tallgrass and helps kill off invasive weeds and plants. When I photographed this shot, I could not believe my luck. Seeing all of the hints of spring, with purple redbud trees and the first green leaves beginning to show on the trees, mixed with the fire lines at one of my favorite area of the Flint Hills. The contrast between the destruction of fire and the new life of spring all in one photo made for a nice balance.
