About the Photograph
By using a telephoto lens, I created this image by isolating and compressing distant hills in Val d’Orcia. As fog rolled across the landscape after sunrise, I focused on the way each layer of hills and land emerged and disappeared, creating a rhythm and separation through tone rather than detail.
Across the landscape, you'll find silhouettes of cypress trees that reinforce a sense of depth. The fog acts almost like negative space, allowing each hilltop to stand alone without visually cluttering the image.
I created Tuscan Layers to be less about a specific location in the Val d'Orcia, but more about the patterns and atmosphere of the morning. It works beautifully as both a small print or large statement piece where the subtle gradations between layers become more pronounced, allowing the composition to feel almost abstract from a distance.
