About the Photograph
I photographed Tuscan Mornings on my second ever morning in the Val d'Orcia. Every morning on that trip was defined by beautiful fog at sunrise that lasted for a number of hours and allowed me to capture so many amazing scenes. This particular scene was photographed shortly after sunrise as fog drifted slowly through the valleys of Val d’Orcia. Being down in the valley, the scene would open up then get socked in again. One moment, I could see the entire tree-lined driveway and the farmhouse of Podere Poggio Covili. The next moment I could barely see ten feet ahead. As the sun partially broke through, I took this moment to photograph the scene as the warm colors were flooding through the fog, while still leaving much of the beautiful landscape softened and partially hidden.
As a Kansas-native, I had to include the wheat fields in a photograph. They made for a great foreground that lead towards the cypress-lined drive. In the distance, the faint outline of the Podere Poggio Covili farmhouse emerges through the fog just showing its presence without pulling from the main focus.
Photographing this in a panoramic format allows the scene to unfold naturally from left to right. It gives space to the layers of fog, farmland and especially allows the trees to define much of the image. This photograph balances structure and atmosphere and makes for a versatile piece that works well in a wide range of interior spaces.
