About the Photograph
I photographed this scene on my very first evening in Tuscany. Storms had been rolling through the Crete Senesi region all afternoon. As sunset approached, I decided to take a chance on the famous cypress-lined road leading into Baccoleno Farmhouse as another storm was passing through. I have learned from living in Kansas that catching a sunset on the tail end of a storm can produce beautiful, clear light. My instincts paid off in this case.
As the storm began to move past, warm sunset light broke through the clouds and the landscape was alive with clear, crisp sunset light! The road dipped gently through the hills, pulling the eye into the frame, while a field of spring wildflowers filled the foreground. It was an amazing moment in time. The combination of dramatic weather, clean light and a field full of poppies is something you simply can’t plan.
I chose to photograph this scene in a panoramic format to let the landscape breathe. The wide format emphasizes the shapes of the cypress trees and the slow curve of the tree-lined drive as it lead toward the historic farmhouse. When printed large, this Tuscan panorama creates a strong sense of depth and light and would make it especially well suited for statement walls and wide spaces.
This image received a Bronze Award and was selected among the top 100 images in the Built Environment category in the 2023 Epson International Pano Awards. If you prefer a more traditional composition that brings you closer to the farm, this scene is also available in a standard landscape format print titled Crete Senesi Sunset. That scene that focuses more tightly on the curves of the cypress-lined drive as it leads to the farm.
