Sunrise In Chamonix

Sunrise In Chamonix

Chamonix-Mont Blanc, France

The morning I shot this was probably the only good weather we had in France. I got up before dawn to find some place to shoot in Chamonix. I knew the clouds would probably light up above Mont Blanc and Glacier des Bossons if I could find a good place to shoot. The town was still and quiet with the exceptions of a few cars on the roads. Having trouble finding a good location to shoot, I looked up and saw how beautiful the alpineglow was on the slopes of Mont Blanc and just decided to shoot right in the middle of town.

Part of the Mont Blanc massive, the Aiguille du Midi spires are the jagged peaks in the right of the photo. In 20 minutes, the Telepharique de l'Aiguille du Midi cable car will take you from the Chamonix valley floor, up to Plan de l'Aiguille and then on to the highest point at 3,842 meters above sea level. You can then ride another cable car across Glacier du Geant to Pointe Helbronner in Italy and down to Courmayeur in the Aosta Valley on the other side of the Mont Blanc massive. The Chamonix cable car holds the record of highest vertical ascent via cable car in the world.
