The Flint Hills are one of the last remaining stretches of native tallgrass prairie in North America. This under-rated American gem is defined by flat-topped hills and tallgrass prairies that change with the seasons. The Flint Hills are also well known for open horizons which showcase some of the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets in the world.

Being so close to home, these hills are a landscape I find myself returning to again and again. I explore them often, even when the conditions are uncertain. When the spring storms are rolling through, they are full of drama. Think lighting under dark storm clouds and then rainbows and clear-air vivid colors as the storm passes right at sunset. Green summer grasses reveal wildflowers of all colors. From spring to fall, fog often forms in the low-lands creating another layer of drama, while frost settles in before sunrise on the cold winter mornings as the tallgrasses grow to considerable heights. And then, one of the most famous rites of spring starts the cycle anew as ranchers and cowboys begin the annual burning of the Flint Hills in February through April. This allows the grasses to rejuvenate and has been a tradition well back into Native American history.

My Flint Hills photography focuses on places like the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, Konza Prairie, Teter Rock and Texaco Hill. From these well known locations, to lesser known vistas I've found by traveling the backroads for years, I am always amazed by what is revealed when taking the time to explore.
