About the Photograph
This photograph was made during my first evening in Tuscany. I had arrived earlier in the day and knew I wanted to photograph the cypress-lined road leading into famous Baccoleno Farmhouse. As storms moved out of the Crete Senesi region and the light began to glow under a breaking sunset, I knew this was going to be a special moment. The landscape softened with the sunset while the hills warmed and the clouds broke. At this moment, the scene finally opened up in a way that felt both dramatic and calm.
The gentle curve of the road becomes the main visual anchor here, drawing your eye into the frame toward the farmhouse and distant hills. Spring wildflowers filled the foreground which added texture and seasonal detail. Nothing beats getting light like this when the poppies were still in bloom. The passing storm helped diffuse the light and gave the image a quiet and glowing atmosphere.
I chose a standard 3:2 format for this composition to keep the focus tight and intimate. This version brings you closer to the road and emphasizes the flow of the cypress trees, along with the subtle layers of rolling terrain beyond. It’s a truly classic Tuscan scene that feels balanced and timeless. It looks especially stunning when printed at larger sizes where the detail in the trees, flowers and hills can really be appreciated.
For collectors who are drawn to a wider and more immersive interpretation of this same evening, I also photographed this scene as a panoramic fine art print titled Under the Tuscan Sunset. That print expands the view to showcase more of the surrounding Crete Senesi countryside.
