Moraine Lake Sunrise Photography Print from Banff National Park
Moraine Lake in Banff National Park is one of the most sought-after landscapes in the Canadian Rockies. Known for its vivid turquoise water and the dramatic peaks of the Valley of the Ten Peaks, it is easily one of the most iconic places in the world. During a brief window each summer, the lake reaches its most vibrant color, creating one of the most unforgettable sunrise scenes in North America.
This fine art print of one of the most beautiful places in Banff captures a rare moment when soft pastel light filled up the early morning sky and reflected across the still waters of Moraine Lake. This combination of color amd light created perfect conditions to make this image perfect for large-format wall art. Printed large, the depth and detail of the scene come fully alive.
For collectors of mountain landscapes and Canadian Rockies photography, Moraine Lake remains a extremely timeless subject, possibly even more so than even Lake Louise. The scene is both powerful and serene, and instantly recognizable, having been on the back of the Canadian $20 bill.
The Story Behind Moraine Lake Sunrise Brilliance
In June, spring turns to summer and Moraine Lake begins to thaw. As the lake level rises, it changes from icy grey to reveal its incredible and famous turquoise color. I captured this image during a week-long road trip through the Canadian Rockies on my way to Hyder, Alaska. It was easily the highlight of the entire journey.
I arrived late the night before, getting in around 1:30 a.m., knowing sunrise would come quickly in the northern Canadian summer. I had flown in to Seattle and drove all day to get to my hotel. With two nights in Banff and only a few hours of sleep, I debated sleeping and trying again the next day. But with limited time, I made the decision to go. I could sleep mid-day, after all. It was still probably the best decision of my entire photography career.
That morning, everything aligned. Even driving from Banff to Moraine on about one hour of real sleep, color started forming in the sky. After arriving at the lake (this was when you could still drive to the lake yourself), I raced up the famous Rockpile to that classic and iconic vantage point looking down over Moraine Lake. A soft, pastel pink sunrise lit up the sky above the lake, perfectly complementing the vibrant blue water below. It was one of those rare moments where conditions come together in a way that simply can’t be planned. I spent a good thirty minutes photographing it, as the clouds drifted slowly through the scene changing the colors slowly through the sunrise. Eventually I wandered around the lake for a bit before heading back to my car, hiking Johnston Canyon, then going back to the hotel for much needed sleep!
The following morning, I returned to completely different conditions. Gone was the warmer air and beautiful pastel skies. Replaced with overcast skies and temperatures over 30F degrees colder. That contrast made it clear just how special this particular sunrise had been. Had I shut my alarm off and slept in, I might have missed one of the best moments of my landscape photography career. Year after year, this image continues to be one of my best sellers. Every time I'm on a trip and I'm exhausted and want to sleep in, I always have that little voice in the back of my head telling me to wake up. You never know what you might miss if you don't!
